California Medical Insurance Quote
What to Expect when Filling out a Health Insurance Quote

Getting a medical insurance quote in California is far from difficult. There are plenty of health insurers who are sitting by the phone awaiting a call from a potential client. The key is to whittle down potential insurers and the start calling them or visiting them online to get a quote for medical insurance. Although quotes aren’t necessarily legally binding, they do give a pretty accurate representation of what sort of coverage is available and at what cost.

Medical insurance companies have professionals on staff who are referred to as actuaries. These mathematical whizzes figure out what sorts of scenarios lead to what results in addition to analyzing risk. Basically what this means for laypeople is that there are several questions a person will be asked when applying for medical insurance coverage, and the answers to these questions determine what sort of rate a person is offered.

The very first bit of information insurers want to find out about is the demographics of the people in the household who will be insured under the policy. This will include the gender and ages of each person including any infants in the household. Next, several other questions regarding each person listed will be asked. Do any of the people who will be insured smoke? This, of course, will raise the rate exponentially or may result in coverage simply being denied. The reasoning behind this, of course, is that smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Insurers aren’t necessarily looking to insure people who are busily digging their own grave.

Occupation can sometimes have an effect on what sort of rate an applicant is offered. There are some occupations, such as police and firefighters, who have inherently higher instances of injury on the job. This can raise insurance rates too. The insurance company may also inquire about any preexisting conditions. This is vital because preexisting conditions are what often get insurance applications denied. People with multiple sclerosis or diabetes are going to have a harder time getting insured, if they are even able to get insured in the first place. Note that since quotes are merely preliminary it is of the utmost importance to be honest when responding, otherwise an accurate quote is impossible.

After the preliminary information is taken different insurance coverage questions will be presented to the applicant. Would they rather have lower monthly premiums or instead have greater flexibility when choosing a doctor? How important is a low deductible to the applicant? In the quote there will probably be a couple of scenarios which the applicant will choose between. Option A might be coverage with a low deductible but no vision coverage, while Option B has higher deductibles but includes vision coverage. After choosing various scenarios the quote will offer some preliminary suggestions for coverage, and if the applicant likes the looks of the offerings then they are ready to talk to a representative to get things rolling. Since quotes do not offer pricing which is metaphorically carved in stone, an insurance representative can offer more detailed information to the applicant to answer any further questions and start up paperwork if necessary.
